In the history of computer networking, the cabling has always taken centre stage. Even in a wireless network, the failsafe that is used to configure and maintain the network is a hardwired computer using a cable. When you set up your wireless network at home, you usually need one of your computers connected to the hub by an Ethernet cable to be able to communicate with the hub at all times. We want to believe that we will someday have computer networks completely based on wireless protocols. But that may be something that is a little further off into the future. For now, cabling remains important.
In the very early days of networking, speeds were slow and the networking equipment was connected by what was referred to as cat 3 cabling. As each new Ethernet protocol is developed, the new Ethernet cables that are developed are put into a category. All Ethernet wiring uses copper to conduct the information, but it is how the information is conducted that determines the category of the cable. When you are talking different types of wiring for an Ethernet protocol, it is the speed that determines the category of the cable.
For a very long time, the Ethernet protocol used what was referred to as a cat 5 cable. The protocol is so popular that it is still in use in present day. This is an Ethernet cable that allows 100 Mbits/s (megabits per second) to travel over a distance of 100 metres. If you have a distance that is longer than 100 metres, then you can use a piece of equipment known as an amplifier. This will help to enhance the signal and get it to flow smoothly from one point to another. In many larger networks, amplifiers are built in to network hubs and switches.
As Ethernet cable advanced, cat 5e was introduced. This is wiring that allows 1,000 Mbits/s to travel over a distance of 100 metres. As the technology continues to advance, the speeds are getting faster. There is now a cat 6 Ethernet wiring that allows 10,000 Mbits/s to travel over a distance of 100 metres. The continued evolution of network wiring has allowed more and more information to be passed between two computers in a more efficient and economical manner. Ethernet remains one of the most popular and widely used forms of computer networking in the world because of its easy setup and smooth data transfer.
